Oberleutnant Fritz Birnbaum earned the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on October 19, 1944 as Oberfähnrich und Zugführer of the 8. Kompanie/ Fallschirm-Panzer-Regiment “Hermann Göring” of the Fallschirm-Panzer-Division 1 “Hermann Göring”.
